How does it work?
We have 3 steps in this program: soft skills and workplace training, on-the-job training, and employment help. Here’s how they work.
Step 1: Get familiar with the Canadian workplace
First, we’ll make sure you’re comfortable with the Canadian workplace. We’ll help you understand how things work here; the unspoken rules, standards, and expectations; and exactly what employers are looking for outside of the technical skills. You’ll be able to feel confident when starting a new job, knowing how to meet employer expectations, perform well in your job, and work well with your colleagues.
You’ll attend a one-day crash course that will get you familiar with everything you need to know about working in Canada. You’ll find out how shifts are run, learn about LEAN fundamentals, find out how business units operate, and discover additional tools and resources that will help you in Canada.
Plus, over 50 employers have told us the type of soft skills they look for when hiring new employees, and we’ll share that with you during the course. You’ll be able to go through the information right there with us and determine what you need to do to make sure you show the right skills to employers.
Step one ends with a workshop where you’ll be able to meet and talk to current industry leaders from frontline workers to executives to ask questions and find guidance about your career in Canada.
Step 2: Get certified with on-the-job training
You’ll attend a week of on-the-job training at Rampf Composite Solutions in Burlington, a leader in producing high-performance materials for industries like aerospace, marine, and medical.
Here you’ll learn the key skills needed to work as a composite technician – someone who is able to transform raw materials like carbon fibre and fibreglass into complex, lightweight, and strong parts.
You’ll learn the technical skills needed, such as Vacuum Assisted Transfer Moulding and Wet Lay-Up, Post-Cure Operations, and Quality Management with hands-on experience on the same equipment used by real workplaces to manufacture these materials.
At the end of the week, you’ll walk away with a Certification as a Level 1 Composite Technician, showing employers you’re competent and ready to work from Day 1.
Step 3: Perfect your CV and start applying
Once you’ve finished training, you’ll spend some time perfecting your new CV until you’re confident that employers can easily understand your value.
But you won’t do it alone.
With the help of people who have years of experience placing employees, you’ll put a magnifying glass to your entire work history, current CV, and the new skills you’ve gained in this program.
We’ll help you pull out the details that show off your skills the best, transform your CV, and bring it in line with Canadian standards.
Then, armed with your new CV, we’ll help you search for a new job. We really want you to have the best chance of getting hired, so we’ll help you every step of the way, from deciding what type of job to apply for to finding the jobs, to preparing for the interviews. We’ll even be reaching out to our network of companies to find any that are interested in hiring graduates of our program.
You’ll need to put in the work as well, but you’ll always have support and help when you need it.
Bonus: Earn a certificate recognized by thousands of companies and join a network of motivated professionals
OACETT is Ontario’s independent certifying body for engineering and applied science technicians and technologists, and has existed since 1962.
Carrying one of their certifications is prestigious and can open many opportunities for your future career – the certifications are recognized all across Ontario. And if you meet the requirements at any point during this program, you’ll be able to write the exam and get your first year of membership for free.
It’s not just the certification that’s valuable, but the opportunity to make new connections and start to expand your own personal network. OACETT’s network consists of over 24,000 members, which you’ll get exclusive access to as a certified member.
If you aren’t sure you meet the requirements, don’t worry. You’ll have the opportunity to work with OACETT to determine what requirements you need to meet, so that you can work towards that certification and unlock the benefits of being an OACETT member.
